Personal & Reading Retreats in Connecticut
Manor House Inn · Norfolk, Connecticut · Litchfield Hills

Rest. Reflect. Retreat.
Some of the most valuable time you can give yourself is unscheduled.
A morning with a book and no obligations. A walk before anyone else is awake. An afternoon that goes wherever it goes. For many of our guests, a few days at Manor House is the first time in months — sometimes years — that they have given themselves that kind of time without justifying it to anyone.
We think that's worth building a trip around.
For the solo traveler
Manor House is quietly one of the best properties in New England for a solo stay. The scale is human. The pace is unhurried. Breakfast is served at your pace, conversation is available when you want it and absent when you don't, and the five acres, the library, and the surrounding trails ask nothing of you but presence.
Norfolk itself rewards the solitary visitor — a walkable village, a historic library, art galleries, Infinity Hall and the Yale Summer School of Music, a short distance away. The Litchfield Hills offer scenic drives, hiking trails, and a landscape that has a way of returning people to themselves.
Rooms are available for solo travelers at any time of year. If you're looking for a quietcation, a nature reset, or simply a few days to think without interruption, this is the place.
For readers
Norfolk has always been a place where books matter. Our local Library is one of the most beautiful in New England. Our onsite library features a thoughtfully assembled collection across five categories — curated in partnership with a local independent bookshop.
A reading retreat here might mean three days with a stack of books you've been meaning to get to. It might mean finishing something you've been writing. It might mean arriving with no plan at all and discovering what wants your attention when the noise finally settles.
We can arrange Nosh & Share Plates, picnic baskets, and in-room provisions so that the rhythm of your days remains entirely your own.
Reading retreat gatherings
Manor House is available for small hosted reading retreats — gatherings of friends, book clubs, or reading communities who want to spend a weekend together in a place designed for exactly that. The property accommodates up to eight overnight guests, with common spaces well-suited to group reading sessions, discussion, and the kind of unhurried conversation that a good book tends to generate.
A hosted reading retreat might include a curated welcome of books and provisions, a shared dinner, morning discussions over breakfast, and afternoons left deliberately open. We work with you in advance to shape the experience around your group and your reading.
Optional: personal coaching
For guests who want to bring greater intention to their time here, innkeeper Rachel Roth leads book club conversations and offers personal coaching sessions grounded in applied positive psychology. A single session or a series can be woven into your stay — particularly suited to guests navigating a transition, clarifying direction, or simply wanting to think more carefully about what comes next.
This is entirely optional. Many guests come simply to rest, and that is more than enough.
